Fokai culture spreads far and wide, proving it is truly international with one of our newest Femme Achievers. Sevara Tyrrell, who grew up on Guam, is currently located in Dallas, Texas and is making her way in the world of electronic music. Before becoming a DJ, Sevara says she spent most of her childhood swimming on Manhoben swim team at the Agana pool. Her older sister, Soonja, also one of our femme achievers, who Sevara says serves as one of her swimming idols as a Micronesian Games gold medalist.
When asked about how being raised on Guam has shaped the person she is, Tyrrell had a lot to say, "Growing up on Guam has taught me the importance of respect and love for everyone. I was raised to understand my multi-cultural existence. I understood that I was different and that some in this world would not understand that or accept it. I had to accept and embrace my differences. Growing up on Guam with such talented, multi-cultured people was a blessing."
Upon her family relocating to Dallas, Texas, she first came into contact with another one of her life passions, EDM. While beginning her love and appreciation for the music, she attended culinary school and even opened a custom cake studio with her mother. Soon after a move to Vegas, Sevara decided to further her love for music, by apprenticing under another Vegas artist by the name DJ Douglas Gibbs, she played at the Downtown Cocktail Room and gigged all over Vegas. Proving that women can grow and succeed even in industries that are predominantly male, "Being a female DJ is empowering. Heck! Being a woman period is empowering" commented Sevara. Recently she spun back here on Guam at Drop but is back in Dallas to study graphic design at the Art Institute.
